Real Tools. No Jokes. If you’re a Klein Tools fan and you need an eight-piece combination ratcheting wrench set, this one’s worth a look. It’s the Klein 69408G, the SAE model, and it comes with a padded roll-up case that keeps everything organized.

First Look: Klein Tools 69408G SAE Ratcheting Combo Wrenches
A compact SAE set that covers pretty much everything I use. The ratchets feel really nice out of the box.

Sizes and Ratchet
You get 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16 and 3/4. The box end has a 92-tooth ratchet with a 4° swing, which should be good for fasteners tucked back where you have limited reach. The smaller swing means less room needed to get the next bite.
Why a Smaller Set
My old set was a 20-piece or something like that. It had a lot of wrenches, it was big, and when it rolled up in my bag it got in the way. I wanted to pare it down to something more compact, so I didn’t replace the full 1/4 to 3/4 set. This one has pretty much everything I’ll ever use. 5/16 shows up on little cabinet boxes and electrical boxes. At work I use the 1/2 and 9/16 the most, a lot of 3/4, the 3/8, and a 5/8 every now and again. This set will be perfect.
Out of the Box
It comes in a tough clamshell with the roll-up case inside, everything in a nice oil bath and well lubricated. The ratchets feel nice. They’re color-coded, which you’ll have to memorize, since you can’t just glance down and know. There’s a coating, kind of like nitride, that gives them a little grip without being too slick. The lettering is well marked. The smaller ones seemed a little smoother on the ratchet, and the bigger ones have bigger teeth, which you’d expect.
The Case
The case feels nice, and it’s padded. Every pocket is marked, so you can easily see which wrench is which. My old canvas roll-up went all the way to the top, so I had to pull a wrench out to read it. My concern is durability. I usually carry the canvas kind, which is a lot more durable, and with the foam in this one I’m not sure how long it’ll last in my operation. That’s why we test it. To be fair, the case isn’t what you’re buying the kit for. It has grommets at the top so you can hang it on a wall in a fixed shop. I’m in a mobile operation, and if you carry tools like this, you probably are too. They live in the bag or on the truck, and the whole case goes to the job site.

First-Look Verdict
These feel really nice, and the eight sizes cover what I use at work. The only question mark so far is how the foam case holds up in a mobile bag.
