Trying to build a compact kit for a dorm room or just keeping some small hand tools tucked under a truck seat is always a headache if you don’t have a way to organize them. I looked at this waxed canvas setup from Roaring Fire to see if it actually holds up for those smaller, grab-and-go tasks without being a total mess in your gear bag.

The build quality feels high, but you have to be picky about what fits in those elastic loops.
Build Quality and Material Feel
The material here is a water-resistant waxed canvas that feels more supple than some of the stiff, heavy rolls I’ve seen. It’s not fully waterproof, but it’s designed to soak up excess oil and resist moisture without feeling like a slick, greasy mess. You can tell there’s a decent amount of wax in there when you scrape it, but it still moves well enough for easy rolling.
At first I could not see the YKK markings, so I was skeptical. It is there. I had to look close, and the camera did not want to focus on it, but the marking is on there.
The build feels solid for the money, even if it takes a little bit of time to break it in so it folds up right. It’s not going to be my main rig for heavy industrial 10-inch wrenches, but for smaller gear, it seems like it’ll hold its shape over time. I have not work-tested it yet. I still need to take it to work and see how the canvas wears, so I am not calling the durability settled yet.

Modular Organization and Fitment Issues
This thing uses a modular system with five removable pouches that attach via hook and loop, which is handy if you only want to carry specific gear. You could load one up with wire nuts or fasteners for an electrical run, or keep your needle-nose pliers in there. You can grab just the pouch you need and leave the rest.
The other side has eight assorted pockets and eleven elastic loops that handle smaller items like folding knives or multi-bit drivers. I tried tucking a Stanley FatMax utility knife into one of the loops, but honestly, it’s a bit too fat for that specific slot. The blade ends up sticking out quite a bit, so you might want to stick to slimmer profiles for those elastic sections.
I put a Klein 7-in-1 Grab-and-Go and a Klein 4-in-1 precision screwdriver in the front zippered pocket, the one that does not come off. They tuck down in there and hold.

Portability and Real-World Sizing
The dimensions on this seem to vary a bit from what some people report online. While the manufacturer lists it around 19.68 by 9.8 inches, my unit measured closer to 21 by 10.5 inches when fully open. That is not a big deal to me, but it is good to know if you’re trying to fit this into a very specific, tight-fitting tool bag or drawer.
It comes with a padded handle on top that makes it easy to grab from behind a seat or out of a cabinet. I was expecting a shoulder strap to come in the box too, but mine didn’t have one, which might just be a factory oversight. If you need to sling this over your shoulder for long walks, you might end up needing to source your own strap.
At about 2.2 lbs empty, it’s light enough that you won’t feel the weight before you even put tools in it. It’s a decent option for an emergency vehicle kit or a ‘get home’ bag if you want to stay organized. Just keep an eye on anything noisy inside, like loose nails, because they’ll rattle around and drive you crazy while you’re driving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my bulky FatMax knife fit the loops?
Probably not. The loops are a bit tight for fat utility knives, so expect the blade to stick out.
Can I carry this over my shoulder?
It’s supposed to have a strap, but mine arrived without one. You might need to buy your own if you want to sling it.
Will it protect my tools from rain?
It’s water-resistant waxed canvas, so it handles some moisture, but don’t count on it being fully waterproof.
Do the small screwdrivers stay put?
The Klein 7-in-1 and 4-in-1 precision tuck down in the front zippered pocket and hold in there.
